ISRU MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Maana Electric is currently looking to fill several positions for Mechanical Engineers with a proven track record in the design of Ultra-High Vacuum and high temperatures and good understanding of space systems and precision mechanics. Your mission

As a vital member of our engineering team, you’ll contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies for In-Situ Resources Utilization (ISRU), turning raw space resources into essential metals and products to boost human space exploration. Your mission will involve designing and optimizing breadboards and prototypes and to innovate new concepts from scratch. Embracing our rapid-prototyping approach, you will interact with interdisciplinary teams during all development stages from design to manufacturing to testing.

Your tasks

  • Supporting the activities of developing new emerging technologies for space exploration and green energy.
  • Conceptualization, design and development of mechanical systems (breadboards, prototypes and industrial equipment) within set budgets and timelines.
  • Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration to different research domains (metallurgy, electrochemistry, material science, UHV).
  • Utilizing CAD and numerical software for 3D modeling and multiphysics simulation (multidimensional parametric analysis, thermo-fluid dynamics, and finite element analysis), to optimize designs and troubleshoot potential issues.
  • Searching and selecting the most appropriate materials for applications operating in highly corrosive and/or high temperature environments.
  • Providing technical expertise and supporting during the manufacturing and assembly processes of breadboards, prototypes and industrial equipment.
  • Searching and selecting suppliers for components and equipment.
  • Staying abreast of industry trends and advancements in mechanical engineering to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into our projects.
  • Providing robust and high-quality reporting of the activities.

What you need to succeed

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Space Engineering or related fields.
  • 3+ years of work are required. PhD can be taken as work experience in case it is on a directly related applicational project.
  • Strong hands-on experience in designing, developing, and building mechanical systems.
  • High proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) for 3D modeling and thermo-structural simulation.
  • Proven experience in development of complex mechanical systems with low engineering tolerances.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Good written and effective oral communication in English. Other languages are considered an asset.
  • Strong work ethics and passion to set and meet high performance standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferably, you’ll also have

  • 5+ years of previous working experience in space projects and knowledge of aerospace review structures (SRR, PDR, CDR, etc.).
  • Proven experience in designing, developing, and implementing high precision mechanisms operating in vacuum conditions and UHV equipment.
  • Proven understanding of mechanics and materials in high temperature conditions (e.g. >1000°C).
  • Hands-on development of breadboards and technical demonstrators in early stages of projects.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards.
